SIGHTS OF SAVONLINNA

Located in Eastern Finland, the city of Savonlinna is considered the most beautiful city in the Saimaa region.

Nashlot - the Swedish name for the city - appeared on the map of Europe as early as 1539.

The construction of the main pride of the city, the Olavinlinna fortress (St. Olav's fortress), began in 1475 to protect the strategically important territory of the Savo region from attacks by Novgorodians. Its founder is the Danish knight Eric Axelsson Tott.

From the fortress you could hear the clatter of swords and the roar of guns, and in peacetime people were engaged in housework. Olavinlinna has always been an important stronghold in the border areas between the Russian and Swedish Empires. Read more...
